South Lakeland Locality NHS Services

South Lakes Locality encompasses two of England's best known National Parks, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. South Lakeland covers an area of 600 square miles including a variety of landscape features;  mountains, fells, lakes, tarns, valleys, pastureland, estuary and coastline.

Over the years these magnificent mountains and beautiful lakes have inspired many famous writers and artists like William Wordsworth, John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter.

Today there are four main urban areas Kendal, Ulverston, Windermere and Grange-over-Sands. The resident population is 103,800 but this is increased considerably by national and international visitors. A total of 32% of the population is aged over 60 compared with the national average of 22%. In June 2009 the 60-64 year old age range has the highest number of residents.. Nationally, the most common age range is 40-44 years old. In 2006 21.3% of the South Lakeland population were retired.

In the South Lakes Locality we have:

  • The Langdale Unit Step up step down at Westmorland General Hospital
  • Primary Care Assessment Service at Westmorland General Hospital
  • Gill Rise, Ulverston

The Community Teams based in the locality provide services to the whole population, enabling patients to remain in their own homes, enhancing both their independence and quality of life. They provide services for the treatment of disease, disorder or injury, diagnostic and screening procedures.
