Ireby Church of England School

Ireby CE Primary School is located in the village of Ireby about 7 miles south of Wigton and 12 miles from Cockermouth (West) and Keswick (South). The school serves the villages of Ireby, Boltongate and Uldale along with the surrounding area. The Ireby CE School catchment area extends from north of Boltongate southwards to the Dash valley.

Ireby CE aims to inspire its children in a Christian environment to be creative, questioning and confident individuals, while caring for others. The school's history goes further back than the present site and building. In his will of 1729, Matthew Caldbeck bequeathed £100 for the education of the poorer children of the parish, but it wasn’t until 1749 that the interest from the bequest was used to found a Grammar School in the village on the site which is now the Women's Institute Hall.

The present school dates back to 1880 when Parkin Croft was purchased from John Bouch Esq. for the building of a school to educate 175 pupils. In July 2002, a former dining room was renovated to become a nursery which is now an integral part of our school life. It provides a gentle introduction to our school and its many activities for children from the age of three.

Plans for our school grounds are under constant review. As well as the tarmac playground and grass football pitch, in 1999 an adventure playground was purchased and built the combined effort of parents and the community. More recently, the children were involved in the construction of our Viking longboat, 'moored' at one end of the playground.

Ireby CE Primary School provides an inclusive, broad and balanced curriculum for all children, including those with special educational needs. The National Curriculum is our starting point for planning that meets with specific needs of individuals and groups of children. When planning, teachers set differentiated learning challenges and respond to children’s diverse learning needs.

There may be a minority of children with particular learning and assessment requirements that could create barriers to learning and progress. These requirements are likely to arise as a consequence of a child having special educational needs (SEN). Teachers take account of these requirements and make provision, where necessary, to support individuals or groups of children and thus enable them to participate effectively in curriculum and assessment activities.
