Mayfield School is situated on the outskirts of Whitehaven, a small Georgian Town on the Solway Firth, in West Cumbria. It has easy access to the Lake District and the Scottish Borders.
Mayfield School is an all age special school for children and young people with special educational needs. We see ourselves as a school of the future offering our children and young people excellent resources and learning opportunities.
We operate two departments.
- Lakes (9 classes) - for Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 & 2
- Mountains (7 classes) - Key Stage 3, 4 and Post 16 students
The school is led by a leadership team of Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and two Assistant Headteachers. Teaching staff include full-time and part-time teachers, supported by a team of Higher Level, Senior Teaching and Teaching Assistants, Midday Support Assistants, an Office Manager and 2 Business Support Officers and a Hydro-Pool Supervisor.
Other professionals work in the school and whilst we encourage them to feel part of the whole school team; they are employed by the Health Authority/Social Care, and as such work in other establishments.
Our teaching record is strong and the staff are our main asset. The teaching in school ranges from good to outstanding. Nothing less is acceptable, as we believe our pupils deserve the best.
In January 2019 we moved into the amazing new Mayfield School at Campus Whitehaven.
The school is purpose built and was designed by architects to provide an outstanding learning environment for our pupils aged 3-19 years.
The funding was secured in 2014.
“Cumbria County Council, Copeland Borough Council, St Benedict’s Catholic High School, Mayfield School, Whitehaven Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield Limited have agreed to work together to sponsor a project to develop transformational new educational facilities for St Benedict’s Catholic High School and Mayfield School together with new sports facilities on a campus site.”
The pupils, staff and professionals contributed to the design process with a wish list of requirements to ensure that we had the special school of our dreams. The resulting school also includes best examples of design from other special schools around the country.
We are delighted with the result and the pupils have made the transition to the new school without hesitation. The new school is a calm welcoming place where the range of learning opportunities are aspirational. When walking around the school pupils are fully engaged in activities making the most of the amazing classrooms and specialist facilities.

All have an Education Health Care Plan. Through the annual review process Mayfield school works with the child and their family to provide a set of learning experiences that match pupil need and parental aspirations. This in turn determines the balance over time between the type of curriculum offered linked directly to a child’s developmental stage. If you have a concern about your child’s development please raise this with the class teacher in the first instance.
