St Matthew's CofE School

In 1856, a native of the village, John Todd (a Manchester merchant), provided funds for the building of St Mathew's Church, the vicarage, St Matthew's CofE School, and four almshouses. We are a very small school comprising of 52 pupils who come from Westnewton, outlying villages and the nearby towns. We have strong links with St Matthew's Church which is situated next door and it is our wish is that all pupils develop their minds and bodies to increase their awareness of social, spiritual and emotional skills and needs in a Christian context. Our school is at the heart of the community and we aim to be a learning community where everyone values themselves, other people and the environment. It is a school where all children achieve high standards in the knowledge and skills they need through quality teaching, collaborative and independent work. It is our ethos that the entire school community takes responsibility for their own actions, makes informed choices and a positive contribution to the school, the local community and the wider world. Children have access to computers and iPads every day and they are used to enhance the curriculum, interactive whiteboards are used in lessons and provide opportunities for all types of learners. EYFS also have a timetabled Computing session each week. School meal uptake is 90% and meals are produced on site. We use locally sourced ingredients and where possible, home grown vegetables from the school garden are used. We participate in a wide range of sporting events and a number of coaches visit the school. This has meant a real enrichment of pupil's PE curriculum and we have been awarded the School Games Mark Gold Award for the last three years.

We participate in a wide range of sporting events and a number of coaches visit the school. This has meant a real enrichment of pupil's PE curriculum and recently we have had great success with our football and tag rugby teams. A year 6 pupil recently won the local cross country competition, a great achievement.
