St James' C of E Junior School - Whitehaven

At St James’ Junior school our aim is to provide a warm and welcoming learning environment for pupils from Year 3 through to Year 6. The school works hard to develop and maintain strong links with our feeder Infant School, St James’ church and the local community. We provide a varied and engaging curriculum to encourage a lifelong love of learning.
We have dedicated employees, who all strive to make the school a great place to develop, grow and learn. The Governing body, which is made up from representatives from the parents, school, church and local community, meets regularly to support and challenge the school’s performance. We also welcome their help in school and on school trips. An active school council meet regularly to provide a platform for the ‘Pupil Voice’.
We can only achieve the best possible outcomes for children with close co-operation between the school and parents. With this comes the excellent opportunity to develop a shared sense of responsibility for the education of children in our school. A key part of this is sharing information. In addition to our parents evenings we encourage a dialogue between school and home throughout the year so that we can work together to provide the best for the children in our care.
School trips are chosen to enrich the curriculum and provide a context for learning. All children are encouraged to participate in sporting events and activities in order to encourage a healthy lifestyle. We also have facilities for ‘early bird’ and after school sessions at either end of the school day.

- Description
Teachers and support staff will, through their experience, training and observations be able to determine if there is a concern with a child related to how they learn. As part of our everyday teaching we carry out both formal and informal assessments and observe how each individual child interacts with others and the progress they make; this will help us decide if a child is having difficulties or needs additional help and support.
