St. Begh's Catholic Junior School

St. Begh's is a Catholic Junior School serving the community of Whitehaven, a pretty, Georgian town on the west coast of Cumbria. Our children are precious. It is the aim of the School to guide and support them as they grow in their faith and understanding of the world. Each and every child has such potential and it is our role to ensure that this is nurtured in an environment that is healthy, happy and stimulating. We commit ourselves wholeheartedly to this aim.

Teaching staff continually strive to design and plan an exciting, broad and balanced curriculum. It is constantly evolving. We make meaningful links between subjects whenever possible through a topic approach and endeavour to make learning as ‘real-life’ and meaningful as we can. We provide opportunities for all children to shine by making sure that all curriculum areas are given sufficient coverage. The backbone to the curriculum are the skills specific to each subject which the children build on each term.

Local Offer

The school employs a number of staff whose role is to support teaching and learning, some of whom work specifically with children who have been identified as experiencing difficulties. Individual or group help is deployed by the SENCo and class teacher. There is constant liaison between all staff involved.  The SENCo ensures that class teachers and teaching assistants are enabled to meet an individual child's specific needs, giving guidance and providing training. During the course of any academic year a range of training opportunities are offered ensuring that both teachers and teaching support staff continually update their knowledge and expertise.
