Shared Lives

Shared Lives is a care and support service for adults aged 18 and over who want to live independently in the community, with the support of a Shared Lives Carer. This support can also be delivered in the form of short breaks and day support. Often the short breaks offered are seen as an opportunity for a holiday for the individual. We provide support across the whole of Cumbria.

People who are supported by Shared Lives Carers are supported in ordinary homes and they share in all the aspects of family life; enjoying a sense of belonging, sense of security and being cared for.

As an alternative to supported living or residential care. Shared Lives care is based on shared interests, lifestyles and often a sense of humour. It’s a bit like fostering – for adults.

We are constantly recruiting carers and have been doing so during the pandemic. Our carers provide support to a variety of people, from older adults, people transitioning from children’s to adults services to people with mental health support needs.

All of our carers are DBS checked and go through a thorough application process to ensure their suitability and undertake a range of training to ensure their continual professional development. Our service is regulated by the CQC and therefore must meet their regulatory standards.

Almost all arrangements will go through a detailed personalised matching process, whereby the Shared Lives Carer will meet with the service user and their family to ensure everyone involved feels comfortable. Although in some cases we can provide emergency respite and for obvious reasons the matching process is somewhat curtailed.

For an individual to be referred to the service this must be done via their social worker. They will only refer the person to us if an up-to-date assessment of needs has taken place and the individual is eligible for services to be provided.

After being “matched”, once support starts, the placement is reviewed regularly and monitored by the scheme worker. We also offer regular “peer group” meetings for both carers and those who use the service, and regularly try and involve the whole shared lives “family” in community events and social media campaigns, therefore providing opportunities for volunteering and co-productive work.
