Stainton CofE Primary School 

Stainton Church of England Primary School is a Voluntary Aided school situated in the village of Stainton three miles west of Penrith in a rural setting in the Eden Valley. Although we are one of the larger village schools in the Eden Valley, we are a smaller than average primary school with approximately 160 pupils on role.  The school provides primary education for children from the ages of 3 - 11 years.

Stainton School has a tradition of academic excellence and we aim to encourage our pupils to maximise their potential within a caring and supportive environment. We believe children have a lot to bring to their own learning and their individual personalities, skills and abilities are valued and fostered. We are committed to giving our pupils a wide range of experiences and opportunities across both a formal and informal curriculum.

We offer a lively and stimulating environment where children can learn and thrive in secure and happy surroundings. Our ultimate goal is that children leave the school to enter secondary education as confident individuals having gained a firm foundation in skills for future learning and life. Pupils with Special Educational needs make good and better progress in our school. Any child, at some point during their school life, may need extra support in order to achieve their full potential. How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

All staff are continually observing and assessing children. As a result, the progress that children make his monitored very closely and if there are any concerns in relation to the progress that is being made, then the SENCo is informed and a meeting is held with parents. 

If parents have concerns, then they should speak to their child's class teacher or the school SENCo. 

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

The Early Years Curriculum is child led at Stainton with learning opportunities being planned around the children's interests. Each child has a key worker who spends quality time with them ensuring that they have settled well into school and that they are making progress. 

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

Curriculum themed topics are used across the school to make learning interactive, relevant and most importantly enjoyable!

Activities are differentiated to suit the individual needs of all children and additional resources are used where necessary.

Support staff work with children in withdrawal groups both in and outside the classroom to provide more focused teaching opportunities. 

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Assessments and observations are done with the children in order to ensure that learning is taking place and that progress is being made. 

Meetings with parents/carers will be held on a regular basis or at the parents request. 

If your child requires an IEP (Individual Educational Plan), targets will be set with the children and parents and reviewed at least termly. 

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

As a school, we dedicate a lot time to ensuring that the well-being of our children is at the centre of our practice. We have class circle time sessions and follow up on topics that have been explored during daily assemblies. 

There are nurture group and 'Time to Talk' sessions that are timetabled as well as class programmes of 'Kids Safe' delivered by the SENCo where the well being and health of children is explored. 

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

The school seeks support from the Local Authority where specialist advisory teachers come into school and offer support and advice to staff and parents. 

The SENCo has links with local schools where practice and policies are shared. 

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Staff have training on support programmes that are currently being used in school. Staff meeting time is designated to providing  in house training and opportunities for staff explore new programmes that can be implemented within school to support children. 

Advising and specialist teachers come into school on a regular basis to meet with and work with staff. 

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

All children are involved in activities outside the classroom and are supported by additional resources or use of extra staff. 

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

Our school is all on one level and is accessible for those with all needs. Physical activities are offered to all children with additional adult support being offered to ensure safety. 

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

If a change of school is taking place then we ensure that information is exchanged and all copies of interventions, education plans or targets are shared. Meetings with new teachers may be arranged to discuss progress, next steps and ensure that a smooth transition takes place. 

Links are made with secondary schools from year 5 and a close relationship is maintained with various visits being planned for both children and their parents to ensure a smooth transition. 



How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Funding is provided for children who have an EHCP (Education Health Care Plan) or Statement which covers the cost of support staff and additional resources that are required. 

Pupil Premium funding is allocated to ensure that children can attend educational visits, residential and are able to have access to a wider range of curriculum opportunities. 

Funding is also used to cover the training of staff and cost of new intervention programmes. 

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

The Headteacher and SENCo meet on a regular basis to discuss the needs of children in the school and the allocation of funding to ensure that all children are given opportunities to meet their full potential. 

Support staff are used across the school to work with children in small groups or in 1:1 situations to help meet targets an further learning. Timetables are created depending on the needs of the children in our school and are reviewed on a regular basis. 

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

At Stainton, we strive to involve parents in their child's education and within our school life.
