Houghton CofE School

We aim to make your child’s experience with us a really happy time where they will remember their learning at Houghton school as being interesting, exciting, challenging, successful and sometimes awe inspiring! Our children and teachers work extremely hard to achieve high standards in learning, providing opportunities to learn creatively and explore ideas. Our children are encouraged to think deeply about their learning and to build on the skills they need to be life-long learners with a passion for learning. There is opportunity to study science, geography and history first hand over at The Croft, our local organic farm. The Croft serves as an extension to our school, enhancing our topic-based curriculum and the children spend a great deal of time there, whether it be making dens to inspire our children to write clear instructions, or tending to their vegetable plots whilst learning about Britain during the Second World War.

We strive to offer our children a secure, safe and caring environment in which they can thrive. Our Christian ethos and values are evident throughout the school and daily Worship time gives all children from faith and non-faith backgrounds the opportunity to grow spiritually. Our children know how to keep themselves safe and how to keep others safe, as reflected in our vision ‘Learning Together in a Caring Community’. Our playtimes have been greatly enhanced with our ‘Playground Buddies’ who provide areas for busy and quiet play, whilst the field allows the children to be active and healthy. A range of clubs and links to local organisations ensure our children develop all their interests. We have strong links with the local community, particularly the church community, and through such strong links the children are learning what it means to ‘be part of a community’.

Our Special Needs policy has been drawn up in response to the DfE Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs We aim to identify any child with Special Needs as early as possible to help their needs to be met and for them to achieve their potential. In outline, a staged process of assessment and action to meet the needs of the individual child is followed. At each stage action plans with targets, monitoring and review procedures are recorded.

Parents are closely involved throughout. At each stage of the process the options available are assessed in the light of progress made. It is only after the involvement of external specialist support that referral to the LEA for statutory assessment may become an option. We employ a part time SEND Co-ordinator: Mrs Paisley who works across the year groups and supports class teachers with the preparation of individualised work.
