Description

A child has special educational needs if he or she has a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision. The aim of our policy for special educational needs is to secure for all children deemed to have such needs, appropriate educational provision which encourages them to achieve their full potential, both as learners and as members of our school and the wider community.

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

If you are concerned that your child has special educational needs you need to first discuss this with their class teacher or the SENco (Mrs Sandra Cummings).

Regular monitoring and assessment ensures children with SEN are quickly identified in school and appropriate support provided.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Each child's needs are different therefore provision varies accordingly.

It may take the form of extra adult support, individual learning programmes or external support.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

Small class sizes enable us to easily adapt the curriculum to suit individual children's needs.  Teaching and learning is adapted to suit the needs of individual children as required.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Each child with SEN is monitored using a class precision plan and if required provided with an IEP which is written by staff and parents to specifically target that child's need.  This is reviewed regularly with parents to monitor progress.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

Support is put into place to support children's well being on a need by need basis, as we recognise that all children are different.  At times we employ outside providers with specific skills to support emotional needs of children with targeted needs.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

A range of specialist services can be called upon by the school, to meet the needs of individual children.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

The staff are all qualified to support children with a range of SEND.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

The needs of individual children are taken into consideration in the planning of each activity including school trips.

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

The school has disabled access to the rear of the building and has disabled toilet facilities.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

The  school has close links with local secondary schools and transition days are planned and well attended.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Support is put into place to support children on a need by need basis, as we recognise that the needs of all SEND children are different. This is done through discussions with the SENCO, class teachers, support staff, specialist teachers (where appropriate), parents and pupils.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Decisions about support are made by the class teacher and SENCO, after discussions with both parents and the individual pupil involved.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

We welcome the involvement of all family members in a range of ways within school.
